A 5-star hotel in a breathtaking setting: this is the incredible Hotel Casa Palopó, the best option for those looking for where to stay on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, with comfort and sophistication.

Luxury with cinematic landscape. This is how the experience of staying at the Hotel Casa Palopo, on the edge of the Lake of Atitlán, a mandatory stop for anyone visiting Guatemala. The lake is bordered by three volcanoes: the San Pedrothe Atitlán and the toliman, which together form a landscape of dreams.

Hotel Casa Palopó – Our review

On the opposite side of the three volcanoes, in the village of Santa Catarina Palopó, is the Hotel Casa Palopo, the only hotel in Guatemala with the seal "Relais & Châteaux”, recently elected by Condé Nast Traveler readers as the best hotel in Central America and the Caribbean in 2015.

The hotel offers 9 rooms carefully decorated with exquisite traces of the heritage. Maya, each in its own way, all with delicious Italian beds that barely allow you to get up. In cash? Breathtaking, as in every angle of the hotel – the magnificence of the Lake and its volcanoes in the background is everywhere and does not allow us to forget where we are: it is paradise.

One of the rooms I was invited to stay in on behalf of the backpacking, keeps a special surprise: its guests can enjoy a delicious outdoor bathtub, with the incredible view of toast. in the bathroom, amenities L'Occitane.

The care is in the details: after returning from a splendid dinner at the hotel, I noticed that the beds had been carefully unmade (or, you could say, properly prepared for a wonderful night's sleep) and chocolates appeared on the nightstand.

For guests who want an even more exclusive and unique experience – I also wondered if it would be possible, the hotel offers a villa with two bedrooms, each with their own bathrooms and balconies, all overlooking the lake, a lounge with a fireplace – nights on the lake can be chilly! –, an incredible infinity pool and a delicious jacuzzi.

Attractions

The region's biggest attraction Lake of Atitlán, in addition to the view itself, are the villages that surround it. THE Casa Palopo it has an exclusive pier, from where daily private boat trips that visit the villages depart.

Guests can choose to visit 1 to 3 villages, and the price varies according to the number of villages visited. For 2 villages, for example, it is around USD 122 for the boat, which holds up to 4 people. There are also boat options for larger groups, just ask when booking the tour.

Hotel Casa Palopó – Our review

I chose to visit two villages, both considered unmissable for those who visit the Lake for the first time and have little time there, as was my case. visited Santiago de Atitlan e San Pedro, each quite different from the other.

Em San Pedro, it is possible to know the weaving of the women who produce the typical local clothes – each village has its unique pattern of prints – in which the techniques of pigmentation of the fabrics and loom are passed from mother to daughter.

It is also common to visit places that produce artisanal chocolate, coffee plantations (the Guatemalan coffee is considered one of the best in the world, but most of the good crops are exported) and medicinal plant gardens, where you can buy natural remedies and teas.

Em Santiago, the largest of the villages, it is worth visiting the cooperative of local painters and artists, as well as exploring the little streets aboard a tuc-tuc, transport used by tourists and locals. There are many options for shops and craft vendors and the tip is: bargain! They are always willing to make a special price and guarantee the sale.

For those who are going to have lunch in Santiago, I strongly recommend Posada Santiago. The restaurant was even recommended to me by the very friendly manager of Casa Palopo, an American who was enchanted by the Guatemala. There you can taste typical Guatemalan and Mexican dishes – I had some very tasty fajitas! As the Posada has a private pier, the Casa Palopo you can pick up guests directly there.

For those who have more time, I advise you to seek more information about the other villages, as each one is very particular. For example, for those looking for a more mystical experience, a good option is to visit San Marcos, which attracts tourists with the proposal to provide this type of experience, with the possibility of doing spiritual treatments, Reiki, massages, yoga, meditation, etc.

For rainy days, or when you just want to relax, there are plenty of options: the hotel has several SPA services, including massages that can be offered in the room.

Furthermore, the Casa Palopo It has a cozy reading room, where guests can borrow books and magazines about fashion, art, travel… There's nothing better than taking advantage of the fireplace in the main room to read a good book before going to bed!

There is a lot to be explored, so I advise those who are looking Where to stay in Lake Atitlan stay at least two nights there.

Restaurant 6.8 Palopo

All meals can be made in the delicious Restaurant 6.8 Palopo, the hotel's restaurant, which in addition to having an elegant and welcoming atmosphere, has the traditional view that will take your breath away.

The menu is full of tempting options. For lunch or dinner, I strongly recommend the sea bass accompanied by vegetables and typical Guatemalan green sauce – a good tip from Guatemala is to taste their wonderful fish.

O Breakfast, which can also be enjoyed in the privacy of the rooms' terrace, is a spectacle on its own: there are contemporary and Guatemalan options. The breads, fruits and juices stand out.

And how about a drink outside on the hotel's terrace? The blueberry mojito is absolutely a must! Rained? Head back to the fireplace room and be enchanted by the Hotel's collection of works, including the friendly works of Botero.

when to visit

I stayed at the hotel in September, the rainy season. Every day dawned very clean and the rain only came in the afternoon, which makes the region visitable all year round. Even if you choose to stay at another hotel, the Restaurant 6.8 Palopo worth the visit (book here). The price is higher than the others in the region – a dish costs around R$80,00 to R$100,00, but the experience is worth every penny.

Location

Casa Palopó is located at Km 6.8 of Catarina Palopó road, in Solola, 3 hours from La Aurora International Airport, na Guatemala City. For information about transportation in Guatemala, see the post “Organizing a tour of Guatemala – what you need to know”. The hotel also has two helipads.

Where to stay on Lake Atitlán: how much does a night cost there

Rates range from USD 154 to USD 492, depending on the suite and time of year being visited. THE Holy Week in Guatemala, for example, is an extremely popular season for tourists – there is a tradition of making salt carpets throughout the country, which attracts pilgrims from all over the world. At this time, therefore, prices are considerably higher.
