This New York time of year in New York, the cityscape combined with the snow that usually falls is transformed into a true movie set! It is not by chance that the Christmas classics of American cinema are commonly set there, giving everyone the feeling of having visited it before, even if it is the first time. The windows, facades and trees gain decorations worthy of productions Hollywoodians, with huge red bows and lots of lights, blending in with the seriousness of skyscrapers.

Christmas Decoration at Rockefeller Center

Among the traditional attractions of this time of year, there is the big tree of Rockefeller Center. Indispensable tourist spot, the tree has thousands of lights that enchant everyone who observes it. In addition, it is there that the most famous ice skating rink in the city is found, with a view of the statue of Prometheus (Titan of Greek mythology) and the flags representing the UN countries. Another track that attracts many tourists is the Wollman Rink, in Central Park – considered one of the best in the world.

Obviously, in this period, as in any other metropolis, everything becomes much more expensive, especially hotels, whose rates usually double the value. The city receives tourists from all over the world, so there are many queues, waits and crowds in all tourist spots.

Now, what about the turnaround?

The city is famous for its New Year's Eve parties and celebrations. There are options for all budgets, tastes and ages.

When I planned my trip, the idea was to spend the turning point in the most famous ceremony, which takes place in Times Square. For over a century, thousands of people have been going to the avenue to wait for the countdown, represented by the neon ball (known as the “falling ball”) that descends 43 meters from the roof of the One Times Square building – this ceremony lasts a total of a mere 60 seconds. A few hours before the countdown there is a musical show, usually with the presence of celebrities and famous bands or singers, but it is only the clock strikes 00:01 for the place to start emptying.

In addition, to guarantee a good place without the mishaps of the agglomeration, it is necessary to arrive early, around 13 pm. That's because the entire avenue is divided into sections - to facilitate security control -, which are closed as they are full of people. The event has maximum security and everyone, without exception, is thoroughly searched by the police. Already at the ready, he would have to wait hours in the cold, standing, without toilets available and without being able to buy alcoholic beverages, as consumption is prohibited on the streets. Disheartening, no?

Of course, for those who can't get close to the building, there are big screens scattered throughout the Times and its surroundings.

For those willing to pay some money, it is possible to make a reservation – well in advance – at one of the restaurants in the region that overlooks the square. There is also the option to buy tickets to celebrate the New Year on one of the many boats that sail through the Hudson River, with privileged view for Manhattan and for fireworks. All this with great comfort, making your wishes for the year that is about to begin with a champagne toast and the sound of a DJ.

Another option to celebrate New Year's Eve in New York?

Well, among these and other options, I preferred the Central Park. Because? There is no cost, there is no commotion and there is a metro station very close by that operates 24 hours a day (finding a taxi available at the turn of the century is an almost impossible mission).

From 22pm, DJs and dancers start to warm up the spectators with lively music. There are many groups of friends, families, couples, all dancing and singing, some even enjoying their small suppers. At 23 pm, a contest and costume parade begin and laughter fills the park. There are whole families with their costumes combined, couples, tourists, all mixing and having fun with some bizarre and other super creative confections.

At midnight, fireworks start for 20 minutes in the Naumburg Bandshell (acoustic shell), at the time between 66th Street and 72nd Street, the fireworks being seen from any point within Central Park.

The program is perfect for those who want to enter the new year fulfilling the mission to stay healthy and super high spirits. #fit project

But if, like me, you can't participate due to the cold, you can just cheer for the brave ones.

For those who choose to go outdoors, I advise you to go very well dressed and with shoes capable of withstanding the snow. Let's just say I didn't have very sturdy boots and I suffered a little bit with frostbitten toes.

Regardless of what you choose, New Year's Eve in New York will surprise you!! Whatever the commemorative date, it will always be a good excuse to embark on incredible days in the capital of the world!

Happy New Year!
