Where to eat in Lucerne – our food tips for your trip

When talking about traveling to Switzerland, a lot is said about the beautiful landscapes, but the gastronomy is also a highlight there! Therefore, I prepared a list of places to eat in Lucerne, one of the cities we visited there!

After our series on what to do in Lugano, our tips for accommodation there and where to eat, our next destination in Switzerland was Lucerne, a beautiful city where the official language is German… time to give you food tips there!

Before recommending the restaurants to you, I wanted to tell you that, as we arrived on a party day in Lucerna, during Carnival there, we ended up eating on the street. During these days of festivities, you will find several stalls with typical foods on the street! Everything we ate there in that scheme was very good, but really good! We tried bread with sausage, pretzel, marroni and, of course, we took the opportunity to have a (or a few!) beers.

For those who want to save money, remember that good quality and good prices are found at Manora (from the Manor supermarket) and at Coop Restaurante (from the Coop supermarket chain). In these supermarkets, like Migros, there are several options for ready-to-go and fresh food to take away, as well as salads and fruits – we have a whole post dedicated to these supermarkets in Switzerland, come read!

But let's move on to our list of restaurants: we've taken care to prepare a democratic list with just one more expensive option, which is for that night when you want to live a more romantic and tourist experience... Let's start the list with it - but, later , we list options that fit in any pocket!

Swiss Oldhous

A friend who is a guide in Switzerland, Ursula, recommended Swiss Oldhous, a classic restaurant there that is for those who want to spend more and eat typical dishes. The location is great and here you will find excellent Swiss dishes, a warm welcome and you can sit at tables inside and outside overlooking the lake. Dish tip to eat there: schnitzel, which is prepared in front of you and absolutely delicious.
The restaurant is expensive and, to have lunch or dinner there, you need a reservation… But if you like schnitzel, you won't regret it! And the wine list is simply fabulous! The staff are always pleasant and they make you feel welcome – the restaurant is ideal for an unforgettable romantic dinner!

Go there: Swiss Oldhous. Address: Lowenpl. 4, 6004 – Lucerne. Telephone: +41 41 410 61 71. Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 am to 23 pm. site

Tibits Restaurant

We went to Tibits Restaurant, on the roof of the train station and we loved the quality, price and variety of food offered! It's a vegan menu, but it's so good that even those who have a problem with it, enjoy it! At Tibits there is absolutely zero waste as you pay for your food by weight and everything is so well organized that you only end up eating what you need! At the same time, the dishes are super attractive and you might not know what to choose. If you want, you can sit in the restaurant's lounge or grab a takeaway and have a meal overlooking the station: it's a different experience to eat a meal while watching the trains arrive and depart.

Go there: Tibits Restaurant. Address: Zentralstrasse 1 Im Bahnhof, 1. Stock, 6003 – Lucerne. Phone: +41 41 226 18 88. Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 6:30 am to 23 pm, and on Sundays, from 8 am to 23 pm. site

By the way, in all cities, at the central train station, the basement works as a mall, with shops and many snack bars and restaurants, it is a good place to eat something more affordable and varied. On this site there is information about what is in a station and schedules and also a link to download the application that has all this information (for iOs and Android).

Tavern Taube

For those who want to try traditional Swiss cuisine, the Wirtsthaus Taube is a great choice! Relax, sit at a table beside the river and enjoy the water running calmly over the dam. A good choice is the roesti with potatoes topped with melted Swiss cheese, tomato, bacon and a fried egg and chives… Delicious! The portions are huge and the staff are friendly. Contrary to appearances, this is not a restaurant for tourists – many locals eat there and are fans of the great service, lovely setting and delicious food!
