Where to stay in Machu Picchu – What is the best option?

Are you going to visit the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, but don't know where to stay? We have prepared a complete guide to help you choose where to stay in that region. Check out!

Those who plan a trip to the ruins of Machu Picchu often cannot imagine how the logistics of getting to the sacred city work. Are there hotels high in the Andean mountains? In this guide we will answer that question and help you choose where to stay in Machu Picchu.

To travel to the Historic Sanctuary there are some accommodation options in the surroundings, and only one where the ruins are located. However, the hotel is five-star and has a high price, a luxury that not everyone who goes to Machu Picchu in search of adventure wants.

To enjoy the tour, we recommend staying at least one night in the cities closest to the ruins, because climbing the mountains to the citadel requires a lot of effort. The day trip from Cusco is tiring and, therefore, you cannot enjoy the place so well, but it is an option for those who have fewer days to travel.

If you have time to spare during your trip, consider spending more than a day there to fully explore the region. In the Sacred Valley of the Incas there are other archaeological sites that are worth visiting. Read on to discover the best place to stay in Machu Picchu and the best hotels for an amazing stay near the Inca Mountains.

In this post you will read:

Where to stay in Machu Picchu

Where to stay in Machu Picchu – What is the best option?

Inca ruins at Ollantaytambo, in the Sacred Valley

The best place to stay in Machu Picchu is the village of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. This is the last place before the Historic Sanctuary and from there it is only 20 minutes by bus to the destination, so you have more time to explore the place.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas has several small towns that can also serve as a base for your trip to Machu Picchu. The best known is Ollantaytambo, from where the train takes 2 hours to reach Aguas Calientes. It is an interesting option, especially if your intention is to visit other ruins in the Sacred Valley.

However, most of those who go to Machu Picchu end up staying in Cusco. The idea is valid, but if you are considering this option, know that it is the most tiring of all. From there, it takes about four hours by train to reach the mountain, not counting the bus journey. That is, you spend more time in transport than in the citadel.

Staying in Aguas Calientes or in Ollantaytambo is more recommended for strategic reasons. Staying in these cities, you get more time to get to know the lost citadel, in addition to having a more relaxed tour. Staying in Cusco is also valid, but you will get tired more.

Cusco, Sacred Valley or Aguas Calientes?

Choosing where to stay in the Sacred Valley of the Incas region depends on what you expect from your trip. There are good deals on hotels in the nearby towns, and the best option is the one that best fits your itinerary or travel style.

If your trip to Peru is faster, with longer days to visit the Inca ruins, Cusco is indeed a great choice. Take the train very early, and come back at the last time. Choose a very comfortable and cozy hotel to rest after the tour, and enjoy as much as you can in the citadel.

If you have more days in the country, consider taking a tour of Valle Sagrado. There are several historical attractions there, and if you enjoy seeing ancient monuments, you will love it. Take the opportunity to stay in Ollanta, which is a charming and very quiet town. There is a train station with cheaper prices there, as the journey from there is shorter.

Another option is to choose a hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo, or Aguas Calientes. The village is the closest point to the tourist attraction, and it's worth it if you want to have a more relaxed trip. Consider one of the luxury hotels in Machu Picchu if you want five-star service to unwind after a day exploring the ruins.

Hotel in Machu Picchu

The only hotel that is next to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. The location is unbeatable, just a few meters from the entrance to the archaeological park. This guarantees some privileges for those who choose to stay there, such as being one of the first to enter the citadel on the day.

The proximity, despite being a positive point, is a problem for some people who seek more peace there. That's because Belmond is right next to where the buses arrive to Machu Picchu. In addition, as it is an environmental preservation area and a UNESCO Heritage Site, there is a lot of criticism about the hotel's presence on the site.

But if you are looking for a luxury service and want to have the convenience of staying at the entrance to Machu Picchu, choose to stay at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. The hotel is luxurious and has an incredible view from the garden and from the windows of some of the rooms, straight to the Huayna Picchu mountain. A truly unique experience.

Where to stay in Aguas Calientes

Machu Picchu Pueblo or Aguas Calientes is the last village before arriving at the Historic Sanctuary. Many people choose it as a base before going up to the ruins, and the city lives off the flow of tourists who visit Peru's main tourist spot. Therefore, the offer of hotels in Machu Picchu is good, with options for all budgets.

The place is very small, with a country town atmosphere. There is a central square, Plaza Manco Capac, with restaurants and shops scattered around it. There are also thermal pools in the city, which is why it is also called Aguas Calientes, but despite having been a tourist attraction in the past, the waters are yellow and not worth the visit.

After taking a walk around the center, eating some typical Peruvian food and buying an alpaca wool souvenir, there is not much else to do there. Machu Picchu Pueblo is essentially a dormitory town. We recommend spending the night there, and visiting the Inca ruins in the morning.

You can also spend the day in the lost citadel and sleep in Aguas Calientes afterwards, to recover from the tour. In this case, it is worth considering a more complete hotel, with a spa service, to relax more and rest well before returning to Cusco. We have selected some hotel options from cheap to luxury that you can see below.

Where to stay in the Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley does not always appear in the travel itineraries of those who go to Machu Picchu, but those who pass straight through it do not know what they are missing. The region holds many surprises about the Inca culture and has many incredible attractions to discover. If you like history and seeing super old buildings, you will love visiting the place.

There are some archaeological sites and other very interesting monuments, such as the Templo del Sol and the salt pans of Maras. It is possible to take a tour of the main cities in the region to get to know the Andean customs and learn more about the people who lived there (we recommend going with a guide to make the most of the tour).

There are seven villages that make up the Sacred Valley, the main ones being Maras, Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Urubamba – which has the same name as the river that bathes the region. Ollanta is the only town from the Inca era that is still inhabited, and it has its own train station, with better prices for being halfway there.

You can find inns in both Urubamba, Pisac and Ollanta. It is better to opt for the latter as it is the most interesting village among the others, as it has more tourist attractions, but accommodation in any of the cities is a good choice. Check out our hotel recommendations below.

Where to stay in Cusco

Cusco is quite touristy and therefore has a good structure for visitors. Even so, it is a very simple city, with old buildings and a strong Spanish influence. To get to know her well, you'll need a few days off. But, as you are looking for where to stay in Machu Picchu, we will help you with your trip to the Historic Sanctuary.

Making the day trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu is tiring, but possible. If you are on a tighter schedule, and your goal is to visit the Inca ruins in one day, this is the best option to climb the mountains (and the only one for those who have little time). Buy train tickets for the first departure time and the last return time and go ahead.

Choose to stay on the outskirts of the Historic Center, which is where most of the city's hotels and commerce are concentrated. In this situation, taking the train very early is the best option. There you will find shops, restaurants, exchange offices, agencies selling tours and the Plaza de Armas, which is where the train departs from IncaRail.

You can also choose to stay in San Blas, which is close to the center. Other regions are not highly recommended, as they are far from Cusco's points of interest and, therefore, you would have to spend on transport to get to the necessary places. We have selected some good hotels in Cusco for your stay. Check out:
