The city of Salzburg Austria

The city has roots going back over 2000 years, when the ancient Romans built the forts in the region. Then, the first Christian kingdom was founded when St. Peter's Church, together with the monastery, was built in 686. The church is a major tourist attraction in the city, as it is one of the oldest in Europe.

Salzburg is divided by the river Salzach between the old town and the new town. Located near the border with Germany, the entire region suffered from bombing during World War II. But since then the city's buildings have been restored and in 1997 the old town (Altstadt) became a UNESCO heritage site.

It's hard to say what attracts visitors the most, as Salzburg has many attractions. But of course the Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the main icons of the city, as is the Salzburg Cathedral.

How to get to Salzburg Austria

Despite being one of Austria's main cities, Salzburg is on the border with Germany. In fact, many people work in Salzburg and live in German cities or vice versa, as it takes less than an hour by car to cross the border.

There are no direct flights from España to Austria. So, if you're coming from big cities like Munich or Vienna, the best way to get there is by land, car, bus or train. From Vienna, the Austrian capital, there are hourly bus and train options.

The Vienna-Salzburg train journey takes less than three hours. Tickets vary widely in price depending on the time of year and advance purchase. But you can expect to spend between 30-50 euros per person.

The bus trip is also quite fast, less than three hours. Tickets are usually cheaper, around 30 euros. Although it is very common for us to hear about train travel in Europe, it is worth checking the prices of bus routes.

The Vienna-Salzburg car journey is just as quick, but be aware of the tolls, which work differently in Austria. So confirm wherever you go rent the car what is the best way to make the payment. In Austria, it is possible to drive with a Brazilian driver's license (and sworn translation) or with the International Driving Permit (PID).

Finally, Salzburg also has an airport with several flights from low-cost companies such as Ryanair, Easyjet and other airlines.

How many days to stay in Salzburg Austria

This is always a difficult question! After all, some travelers prefer to go faster to see many places. Others like to stay longer and really get to know the local culture, people and buildings.

It is possible to know superficially the main tourist attractions in just one day. However, a stay of 3 to 5 days allows you to know more in depth and even take short trips through the region, which is beautiful.

For example, from Salzburg you can discover the Alpine lake region of Salzkammergut and the picturesque town of Hallstatt.

When to go to Salzburg

Like many attractions in Europe, opening hours and even entrance fees to attractions in Salzburg Austria can vary depending on the time of year. They are usually open longer during the summer when the days are longer.

At the same time, prices go up in the high seasons – which can be summer (especially July and August) or winter (December and January), if you head to the more alpine areas of the region or visit Salzburg during the Christmas markets.

During Spring and Autumn, you will find cheaper prices and fewer tourists in the region. During Easter week, the city has the Osterfestspiele, a festival with open-air orchestras and kiosks with attractions.

Anyway, in general, all attractions are accessible at all times of the year. In fact, most of it is on the banks of the Salzach River, so it's super easy to get around Salzburg.

Things to do in Salzburg

There are many attractions and most of them charge entrance, so a tip is to buy the Salzburg Card. You can buy the card both online and at tourist offices. We bought the Salzburg Card online for 42 euros for three days per person. In low season, the value decreases.

With the Salzburg Card you will have access to all the main sights and attractions, as well as unlimited use of public transport and general discounts.

Tips for Salzburg – Currency, visa, language and other information

Salzburg is one of the main cities in Austria. The central European country is part of the European Union, Schengen Treaty and the Eurozone. This has some implications for Brazilian travelers.

First of all, you don't need a special visa for tourism in Austria. The visa is issued as soon as you arrive in the Schengen zone and is valid for three months.

However, in order not to have problems at Immigration or during your trip, it is mandatory to europe travel insurance, plus an international credit card and basic travel information – dates, accommodation, etc.

As part of the euro zone, the country's official currency is the euro. In Austria, it is very common for some establishments to accept cash only. So, take a card for emergencies, but be sure to also have extra cash in case you need it.

In addition, the official language of Austria is German. Many places, especially the more touristy ones, will have information and English speaking staff. However, this does not always happen, but mimicry always helps. Finding someone who speaks Portuguese will be rare.

If possible, travel with a international cell phone chip to help you in case of doubt, with translations and maps. Also write down the address of your hosting somewhere that is easily accessible and does not depend on technology.

Austria is an extremely safe country, but it's worth keeping an eye out, especially in the most crowded and touristy places. During bus trips, for example, keep an eye on your luggage.
