History of the House of Music in Vienna

Located in the Palace of Archduke Charles, the House of Music was originally the residence of the founder and first master of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: Otto Nicolai (1810-1849). It was in this place that the composer premiered some of his most beautiful masterpieces. Only the first floor of the museum has remained in its original state and today it houses the historical archives of the world-famous orchestra.

Predestined to become a museum dedicated to art, the House of Music soon proved to be ideal for illustrating Austrian music culture. Thus, in 2000, the Haus der Musik opened its doors to the public, inviting them to discover the timeless face of the city, the one orchestrated by classical music.

In 2015, the place will be known all over the world: the Haus der Musik becomes the first Austrian museum to have signed an agreement with another country (Mexico), for the construction of a music museum based on the one in Vienna: the Casa de la Música de Viena en Puebla.

Today, the House of Music counts nearly three million visitors and attracts a little more each year. From enthusiasts to amateurs, it invites you to discover the great love story that has always united Vienna and music...
