Driving in the Dolomites in a motorhome: traffic rules to know

Speed to be respected

Driving in Italy is easy in general, but since the roads in the Dolomites are mountainous, you have to stay alert. When you visit the Dolomites in a motorhome, the speed limits are the same as for cars :

  • 50 km/h in the city,
  • 30 miles an hour on the road,
  • 110 km/h on dual carriageways,
  • 80 miles per hour on the highways.

Security measures

Unfortunately, local drivers are a bit sporty in their driving. But on your side, don't do the same. They're used to driving on those twisty roads, but you're not. So take your time and pay close attention to the road. Mountain roads are very dangerous, some more so than others. Moreover, when visiting the Dolomites in a camper van, you will have a heavy and difficult vehicle to steer.

In addition, all the usual safety measures and rules are in place. Among others, the wearing of seat belts and the use of child seats must be respected.

Blood Alcohol Concentration

As for the blood alcohol level, it is a maximum of 0.5 g/l. It is therefore the same as in France, and you must respect this limit. Indeed, if you break the law, you risk not only fines, but also more serious penalties.

Limited traffic zone

Finally, it is very important to note that some cities will have a ZTL, or limited traffic zone. In this one, you will need a special authorization to cross it. If you don't have one when you visit the Dolomites in a camper van, you risk fines.

Motorway tolls in the Dolomites: which tariff for your motorhome category?

You can visit the Dolomites by motorhome at your leisure along many roads. Indeed, few of them are not free of charge. If you wish to go to Tre Cime, you will have to pass through a toll station. At the toll station you will have to pay 24€ for the toll.
